Monash High School was initially established in the grounds of Nottinghill State Primary School, North Clayton.  Seventy-two Form I (Year 7) pupils along with five teachers and one office staff were accommodated in three portable classrooms.

As the inaugural year commenced so did the decisions that shaped the schools future.

-choosing the school colours, emblem, uniforms, house system.

It was a year of firsts...First House and Inter-school Swimming carnival, Athletics carnival, Cross-country, Ladies Auxiliary, Parents’ and Teachers’ Association, Form Captains, House Captains and School Captains. Also the first Record, Library and Mathematics clubs.

Memorable moments this year include trips to the Melbourne Museum, the Herald Sun Art Show, Monash University to greet the Duke and Duchess of Gloucester and the Round Victoria ( 1218 miles) bus epic.

Comprehensive, entertaining notes were provided from the three forms however one form left us an historical account of their “portable” education experiences.

-Form IB would like to record the following impressions of Monash High School’s first year for the sake of future historians.

Why Monash is unique-

  1. The only school in Melbourne to lose every football match
  2. The smallest high school in the metropolitan area
  3. The only school with wall-to-wall dust
  4. The only school built in a national park( because the government wants to preserve the species around here)
  5. The only school with built- in geysers ( use the taps to see the wonders of nature)
  6. The only school with a Bell rung by a Tye.
  7. The only school where nature walks in-snakes, dogs etc
  8. The only school with lockers for dressing rooms
  9. The only school that combines Woodwork and Phys.Ed.
