In order to address the needs of the young people in the school, startling changes occurred this year. The world they lived in was changing. Social customs, mode of dress, attitudes to work and money, attitudes to law and order, and responses to obedience and authority were evolving. Monash High School developed far sighted policies, despite misunderstandings from the parents and community.

Significant changes during 1972.

1. Responsible and purposeful student leadership. The SRC’s Social Committee organized entertainment and social gatherings. The tone of the school was raised by these activities that promoted friendliness and sociability.

 2. Uniforms became optional for Forms 4, 5& 6. Following representations from the SRC, staff and a ballot of parents, the alternate dress policy was introduced.

3. Introduction of recreational activities as “sport” for senior students. Now as well as traditional sports the school offered a range of recreations such as ice skating, squash, chess, Yoga and table tennis.

4. Decreased interest in inter-school and inter-house sports. There was a greater degree of individual participation and less of the “spectator –attitude”. Trophy hunting days were over. The house system, all sports trophies for individual competition and all inter-house  competition were abandoned.

However a balance was preserved. The school community was pleased to be successful in sport. Throughout the year four sporting premierships were won whilst outstanding athletes were encouraged to pursue the development of their skills.

5. The school issued its own “Sixth Form Certificate” additional to the University’s H.S.C.

6. No further school formal examinations. Honour certificates were also abolished.

7. Development of core-elective system and new subjects for Forms 3 & 4 1973. The elective sets were enlarged for Forms 5 & 6.

8. The Art and Craft Department expanded, offering students weaving, metal craft, jewelry, woodcrafts and textile design.

9. Introduction of the subject “Human Relationships” ( Understanding sexual responsibilities).

10. Audio and film resources were available to students housed in the revamped library.

11. Audio method of teaching typing, using a tape recorder.
